Two bills that passed in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Wednesday would increase fees on phones and other wireless devices in order to adequately fund the state's 911 and 988 call centers. The 911 bill would increase the existing $1.65 fee while the 988 bill would implement a 6 cent surcharge. Both would increase with inflation each year if passed by the state Senate and signed into law by Gov. Josh Shapiro, who is pushing for a $50 million investment in 911 call centers as part of his 2024 budget proposal.
